Today I learned
To end things gracefully
Not up in the air
Not in disarray
Not squeezing into ill-fitting
Not ghosting or half-assed
Not under or over explaining
Not justifying or pleading
Not glossing over the details
Not taking all the responsibility, only my own

I coiled the light strings
I nested the glass and ceramic
I created safety from newspaper
And longevity from bubblewrap
I zipped the tree into its own bag
I flattened every strip of the paper chain
I counted boxes
Then I counted lids

There is a heaviness
A plodding energy
To ending things the right way
But I suspect it will get easier
