Same Lesson, Different Day*

She keeps returning, persistent, optimistic
On my doorstep with different guises
Sometimes an orphan tucked in a wicker basket,
Sometimes a salesman rocking eagerly on his heels
Sometimes two children stacked under a trench coat,
Or a an extra terrestrial in rags having burned a flower of creosote into my walkway upon re-entry
She will rotate and nudge like an under-inflated balloon until I learn whatever she is teaching
These lessons will bore, intimidate, lean heavily and stare straight at me with one unblinking eyeball
Sometimes consequences will be suffered
And at some point I will become so accustomed that I will brush past her on my way out
Saying merely, oh its you again
Until her hold on me is complete
Until I have grown whatever needed
To be still and listen and integrate

*But its not just about being stubborn, its also about needing all the facets, all the applications in order to really conceptualize and prioritize the lesson
###

Mutant

I cannot be blamed for using my powers of codependency for self-interest
Society should not have built me this way
If my people pleasing ways have become too powerful,
It is not fair that I be cast out into the forest
With no means of survival
The patriarchy created this monster
And now it will only take me out with mobs and pitchforks
It can’t use dogs, because I will know exactly what dogs want
###

Twins

She writes like an elegant long stemmed flower
Eyes bright and steady, fingers poised and ready
Straight backed and confident

She writes like a bleary-eyed harpy
Unshowered, braless, and surrounded by unfazed minions
Fueled by caffeine and unreasonable expectations
