Some updates from the labyrinth: I forgot my camera but I can attest that out back there was a lone dandelion with upturned petals, perfectly cupping a little scoop of new fallen snow. She was perfect, living her best life in this moment in time. No foreboding, no regrets, just beauty facing the sky. I’m also pleased to report that the lions are doing well, robust as always. They ask for an ancestor offering of akevitt on the new year. It will keep us both warm. Also noted: one oval shaped opening in the cloud cover allowing blue. It’s reflection in the pond felt like abundance. A reflection of the actual pond is nestled in the field. A puddle really, but resilient. I hope it freezes over to hold small objects on its surface. The milk weed hulls indicated in a husky whisper that they have all transitioned over to their dry, sculptural steel grey forms, like sophisticated crones with angular features and enviable fashion sense. There are of course still seeds clinging here and there but they are incidental, the hulls have moved on.
Description:
During the Twelve Omen Days, beginning on December 25, 2021, one seeks a sign or omen in nature (we can interpret nature loosely) on each of the twelve days between Christmas and Twelfth Night; each day represents a month in the coming year, and the omens received will bring insight into the lessons that month will bring.
I invite anyone who feels moved to use the twelve omen days to not only tune in to the signs available to us in preparation for the coming year but also to infuse our writing practice with the magic of this interlude, giving ourselves a well deserved time of contemplation, mindfulness, and creative expression in community.
I cannot say I always honor the twelve omen days because I don’t. I let every year inform me as to where my attention should rest. Sometimes the twelve omen days get preference and sometimes not. But this year, for sure, I feel drawn. Which certainly makes me curious- and honestly, if you feel similarly- it should make you feel curious too. What brought you to this place? Who is this person that feels called? Strong? Weak? Both?
Here is a handy dandy chart of the twelve omen days and what future month they are connected to. Maybe you can hold this all in your head but this is of great help to me- I can’t tell you how many times I miscounted and was convinced “12” was not accurate.
ONE…December 25- January 2022
TWO…December 26- February 2022
THREE…December 27- March 2022
FOUR…December 28- April 2022
FIVE…December 29- May 2022
SIX…December 30- June 2022
SEVEN…December 31- July 2022
EIGHT…January 1- August 2022
NINE…January 2- September 2022
TEN…January 3- October 2022
ELEVEN…January 4- November 2022
TWELVE…January 5- December 2022
Now. In full disclosure, I am going to give you advice that I have never once followed. Even if you document your omens somehow, ALSO get a 2022 calendar and make notes on every month. Just do it (I’m talking to both of us).
The Twelve Omen Days Writing Challenge takes things a step further. Along with noticing and acknowledging daily omens that will (I promise) show up in your life- you will put words to them and share them and actively use this experience to inform future endeavors. I agree to support by participating by your side, sending out helpful (I hope) missives while you are journeying via email and text, as well as posting on IF and on our facebook event discussion.
My availability from 12/25 through 12/30 will be limited. I am taking a sabbatical of sorts, staying with my immediate family in a cabin with no wifi, a beach, a marsh, temperate weather, and seafood that requires eating. This will be prime omen time and very necessary for my process- to un-stake myself from home and work and distraction. If I decide to continue my existence as a swamp hag, I have instructed my husband to notify you.
